There are a variety of plans you can choose from depending on how customized you want your box to be and how much meat your family eats. You can choose a delivery frequency that works for you and pause or skip deliveries at any time.
You can choose from:
- Custom Box: you get to choose what cuts are included. A little more expensive than the curated boxes, but you also get 20% more meat. The custom box option also allows you to select seafood as part of your box.
- Mixed (Curated) Box: you choose what type of meat you want, and ButcherBox chooses the specific cuts. This is a great option if you want to try new things or be more cost effective.
If you choose the Mixed Box/Curated Box option (where ButcherBox chooses the cuts of meat for you), you have the option to choose between boxes that are:
- Beef, Chicken and Pork
- Beef and Chicken
- Beef and Pork
Each box comes in a “Classic Box” or “Big Box” size depending on how many pounds of meat you need.
For context, our family (two adults and three hungry kids) receives the Classic Custom Box every 4 weeks. I like being able to customize our box with some of our favorite orders that I know the kids will like as well as being able to try new things.

Our family is signed up for the Custom Box, so we choose the cuts of meat we want to receive in our box every month.
I like being able to try out new things and swap options out, but there are some classic cuts of meat we love and regularly order, like:
- Chicken Thighs (I make this easy Sheet Pan Chicken and Veggie Bake at least once a week)
- Sirloin Steak Tips (our favorite for stir-fry or kabobs)

Is ButcherBox Worth It?
For our family, the answer is an easy yes. We’re a busy family of five (and have some big appetites too) and the convenience of delivery paired with the quality of the protein we receive definitely makes this meat delivery subscription service worth it to us.
Pros of ButcherBox
- High-Quality Meats. No antibiotics or added hormones, pasture raised grass fed beef, free range organic chicken, wild caught seafood… everything that comes in our box is raised humanely (and you can tell by how good it tastes!).
- Fair Pricing. For the quality of the meat, ButcherBox pricing is extremely fair. I’ve found that for the same quality meat and the price is on par with what I find at my local grocery store. They also regularly run members-only specials and promos that increase the value of your box even more.
- (Free) Delivery Straight To Your Door. The convenience is one of the biggest selling points for me. This is a huge time saver in this season of life, and I appreciate not having to make an extra run to a custom butcher to get this quality meat.

Cons of ButcherBox
- Freezer Space Needed. Ordering our meat in bulk means that we don’t eat it all at once. We have an extra deep freezer so this hasn’t been an issue for us, but if you have a small freezer you’ll have to prioritize freezer space.
- Not Always Lowest Price Option. If my local grocery store is running a really great sale or promotion, I can sometimes find a lower price elsewhere. That said, for the quality and convenience of the meat, I still find ButcherBox to be the best value.

The process is super simple: choose your plan, choose your delivery frequency, and get high-quality meat delivered directly to your door. A variety of box options and price points are available, and you can customize delivery frequency to match your schedule. Orders are packed with dry ice to keep everything at an optimal temperature during the delivery process.
How Much Does ButcherBox Cost?
ButcherBox offers two sizes in both a custom box and mixed (curated) box. A classic-sized custom box is $169/month (9-14 lbs of meat) and a big custom box is $306/month (18-26 lbs of meat). A classic-sized mixed box is $146/month (8-11 lbs of meat) and a big mixed box is $269/month (16-22 lbs of meat). Shipping is free, which is a nice bonus. For the quality, I’ve found the price per pound to be the same or cheaper than the grocery store.
