Devotional: Contentment in Answered Prayers {Psalm 131:2}

‘I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.’ {Psalm 131:2}

prayer for gratitude | answered prayers | weekly devotional

A couple weeks ago I shared about dreams and goals. About how I was struggling to dream, how I couldn’t imagine where I wanted to be in 10 years, something I feel like had always come natural to me.

Yet, since becoming a mother, dreaming is something I haven’t given myself the mental space and capacity to do.

I’ve been praying about this. And reflecting on past dreams I’ve prayed for.

Imagine for a moment if you wrote down every dream or prayer request you sent up to Jesus. Then imagine if every time a prayer was answered you went back and wrote answered next to it. Would you have a notebook full of answered prayers?

It’s easy to look at our current lives and see the challenges and struggles. To compare our beginning with someone else’s middle. To be discontent.

But if I look back at God’s tapestry, all the different threads of my life that have been woven together by His hands; I’m in complete awe.

I remember going on long runs in my marathon training days, dreaming about my future wedding; praying I’d find a husband to run life alongside me.

I remember the car rides from one sales meeting to the next where I’d dream about filming workout videos and pray I could one day stop selling bariatric medical equipment and start my own business.

I remember holding my husband’s hand at mealtimes, bedtimes and doctors appointments, praying for the healthy son we now hold in our hands daily.

Answered. Answered. Answered prayers. Some of my biggest struggles today, or areas where I feel like I’m falling short, are the same things I spent years praying for and now have.

God didn’t say being a wife, mother, and small business owner would be easy, and I feel that daily {enter discontentment}. But he did answer those prayers.

I find an overwhelming sense of contentment when I reflect on these answered prayers. And maybe before I can dream and pray over new big dreams I need to take a moment to thank God for my answered prayers. Because from a place of gratitude we see so much possibility!

Devotional Prayer: Contentment in Answered Prayers

Dear God,
When I get still enough to reflect on the amazing tapestry of my life I’m in complete awe of how you’ve woven it all together.
Thank you for the things I prayed for years ago and now have.
I pray that your hands continue to shape the possibilities of my future.
